It’s the weekend each year Flagstaff bluegrass fans wait for! The Flagstaff Pickin’ in the Pines Bluegrass and Acoustic Music Festival is Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Pepsi Amphitheater at Fort Tuthill! Presented each year by Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music, featuring the best traditional and contemporary bluegrass music, this year’s lineup is sure to delight audiences with local and national acts including Peter Rowan’s Bluegrass Band, The New Reeltime Travelers, The Railsplitters, The Sonoran Dogs, Burnett Family Bluegrass, Run Boy Run, The Jack Webb New Orleans Jazz Band, Jesse Anderson and Tony Norris, and many more! The festival also features educational workshops and band contest, all in a family-friendly setting. Camping and jamming are also a big part of the weekend experience. Every Friday and Saturday in September, Flagstaff’s Pioneer Museum (2340 N. Fort Valley Road) offers Chuck Wagon Cooking Demonstrations. Learn about Dutch oven cooking, using the chuck wagon as an outdoor kitchen, with biscuits and beans galore! Demonstrations at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. Included in price of museum admission: Adults $6, seniors $5, youth 7-18 $3, 6 and under are free. (Weather permitting)
Celebrate the wonders of the Arizona National Scenic Trail as it traverses the City of Flagstaff at Arizona Trail Day – Flagstaff on Saturday at Buffalo Park, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. The celebration features live music provided by the Voluntary String Band, local food, information booths, kids’ activities including face painting and wildlife information, a beer garden, a gear swap, and much more. Free.
The Museum of Northern Arizona’s Discovery 2nd Saturday Program this month features Pond Life. Discover the fascinating plants and animals that live in these small bodies of water. Walk to MNA’s pond to collect and observe pond-life and participate in related crafts and activities. 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Free with museum admission.
Lumberjack Football returns to the Skydome on Saturday as Northern Arizona University meets New Mexico Highlands University at 4:00 p.m. in NAU’s home opener. Tickets are $10 – $30. (Avoid traffic on Milton Road!)
The Arboretum at Flagstaff and Flagstaff’s Sustainable Economic Development Initiative (SEDI) present Wine in the Woods on Sunday afternoon, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. The event showcases Arizona wineries and local eateries in the Arboretum gardens with live musical entertainment. Featured wineries will include Burning Tree Cellars, Pillsbury Wine Company, Javelina Leap Winery, Oak Creek Winery, Caduceus Cellars, Arizona Stronghold Wines, and Cellar 433 AZ Wine and more! Tickets: $35 in advance; $45 day-of (includes 10 tickets for wine and food tasting and a complimentary wine glass); Children 12 and under enter for free when accompanied by parent. Additional tasting tickets are available for purchase at the event.
Only three Sundays left this season for Guided Hart Prairie Nature Walks on the western slope of the San Francisco Peaks with a member of the Nature Conservancy. These ninety-minute walks offer the opportunity to learn more about birds, wildflowers, forest ecology, and the Conservancy’s work across the region. To join the walks, meet at the Fort Valley Plaza Shopping Center, 1000 N. Humphreys Street, at the southwest corner by the guardrail.
