Things to Do in Flagstaff This Weekend

 

Poster of 39 Steps ProductionOn Friday, Saturday and Sunday, see the latest production of the Theatrikos Theatre Company – The 39 Steps, Broadway’s longest running comedy – at the Doris Harper-White Playhouse.  A man with a boring life meets a woman with a thick accent who says she’s a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called “The 39 Steps” is hot on the man’s trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale!   Dates through August 10th.  Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., Sundays at 2:00 p.m.  Theatrikos box office: (928) 774-1662.

Downtown Friday Nights on Heritage Square this week features Capoeira Amizade Flagstaff, a local group devoted to the understanding and practice of the Afro-Brazilian art of Capoeira, along with long time local favorite musician Jimmy DeBlois. 6:00 p.m.

Hear the songwriters behind the more famous Nashville artists at a Nashville Hit Songwriters Acoustic Concert on Friday evening at the Museum Club.  Meet and greet with Earl Bud Lee, John Wiggins, and J. Michael Harter – the talent behind songs like “Friends in Low Places,” “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off,” and “Who Are You When I’m Not Looking.”  The show features hits by George Strait, Garth Brooks, Blake Shelton, and many others sung by the writers who wrote them.  At the Museum Club, ages 21+, $15.  Meet the artists at 6:00 p.m. before the show.

Also on Friday evening, Jestercomedy presents the Anger Management Stand-Up Comedy Show’s return to the Orpheum Theater, featuring Vince Passalacqua, James Pietragallo, Boomer Nichols, and Jamie Anderson.  $7. Bring a new, unopened toy and get in for $5. Toys go to “Baylee’s Wish” to bring toys to the children at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Gather your adventurous friends for the Flagstaff Extreme Terrain Mud Run on Saturday at Fort Tuthill County Park. Choose YOUR course of 5k, 10k or 10k. Party at the finish line with friends, family, mud and views of the obstacles you conquered.  Sign up at the website and save.  Prices on race day are $70 for adults and $45 for 15 and under.  Racing begins at 8:00 a.m.

On Saturday afternoon, Arizona Border Collie Rescue hosts the biggest animal adoption event in Northern Arizona – The 8th Annual Rescue Roundup. Dozens of rescues, shelters and vendors will participate in this family oriented event. Check out the raffle tent for some howlin’ good prizes and a very special raffle for a Connie Townsend portrait and a beautiful quilt!  Low cost shot clinic and microchip clinic.  Flagstaff City Hall front lawn, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Also on Saturday, the City of Flagstaff Recreation Services Department presents a Watercolor Clinic where you may start a hobby that lasts a lifetime. In this beginner class you will learn about brushes, paints, pigments, paper & beginning painting techniques.  $5 per person, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Later on Saturday at the Aquaplex, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., there’s a Salsa Clinic (the food, not the dance).  Spice up your life and learn how to make delicious salsas and sauces.  $5 per person, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.

This week’s Movie on the Square on Heritage Square is “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2.”  A free family movie is shown at dusk on the town square every Saturday evening through the summer.  Entertainment begins at 5:00 p.m.  Get down there early to stake out a spot for a blanket or lawn chairs!

The Flagstaff Youth Theatre production of Shrek the Musical, continues this weekend, bringing everyone’s favorite ogre to life with song, dance and breathtaking scenery.  Friday at 7:00 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m., and Sunday at 2:00 p.m.  Dates through August 3rd.  At Flagstaff High School Main Auditorium.  Evening performances – adults $10, youth 12 and under $8.  Matinee performances – adults $9, youth 12 and under $7.
