The legendary folk music icon, Arlo Guthrie, shares timeless stories and unforgettable classic songs, returning to The Orpheum in Flagstaff on Saturday evening at 8:00 p.m. For the tour, Here Comes The Kid, Arlo is joined by his son, Abe Guthrie (keyboards and vocals), Bobby Sweet (on guitar and vocals), and old friend Terry A La Berry (drums and vocals). The “Kid” tour focuses on the Woody Guthrie Centennial, with Arlo adding his own material as well. Tickets are $36 – $65.
This weekend, opera enthusiasts can enjoy the Northern Arizona University School of Music production of L’incoronazione di Poppea (The Coronation of Poppea), an opera in three acts by Claudio Monteverde, first performed in Venice in 1643. The first opera to be based on actual historical figures, The Coronation of Poppea tells the story of the glamorous courtesan Poppea who captures the heart of the Roman emperor Nero, causing him to renounce his wife and make Poppea his empress. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Pre-concert lectures begin 45 minutes prior to each performance. At NAU’s Ardrey Auditorium. The Theatrikos Theatre Company’s production, Boeing, Boeing continues this weekend — Friday and Saturday evenings (7:30 p.m.) and Sunday (2:00 p.m.). Coming up, it’s the first Friday of the month, and art comes to life throughout downtown Flagstaff during the First Friday ArtWalk. See new exhibitions in galleries, transformed spaces, restaurants and businesses. 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., and after! On Friday, during the ArtWalk, stop by Flagstaff’s new Center for Indigenos Music and Culture (213 S. San Francisco St.) for a night of indigenous roots and reggae. See Hopi artist and singer-songwriter Ed Kabotie and his band, the Xoyotes. Free, all ages show. 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
On Saturday morning, bright and early, runners should head out to Forest Highlands Golf Club for the Flagstaff Sports Foundation’s Annual 5K and 10K Run. It’s a fundraiser for the Foundation’s mission to promote sports in the community. It’s also your chance to run a course through the fairways and trees of the private club and train for the summer racing season. Pick up packets after 7:30 a.m. at the Meadows Clubhouse. Races begin at 9:00 a.m. Adults $30, youth $15.
If you’re looking for a meaningful volunteer opportunity, attend orientation on Saturday morning with Literacy Volunteers of Coconino County for their program Partnership for Literacy Rehabilitation – Teach Literacy in Our County Jail. Flagstaff Arts & Leadership Academy (FALA) hosts its annual FALA Gala on Saturday evening at the Coconino Center for the Arts. Celebrate in style at this fundraiser with delicious food and drink, live entertainment, and spectacular silent auction items.
