On Saturday, be an archaeologist for the day at the Museum of Northern Arizona Explore prehistoric Native American cultures with hands-on demonstrations with archaeologists from Elden Pueblo. Participate in crafts and try your hand throwing a rabbit stick, grinding corn, using a pump drill and more. MNA’s Second Saturday Archaeology Day is part of the celebration of March as Archaeology Month. 2:00 p.m. Free with regular museum admission.
A new show is open at MNA — Echoes and Undercurrents. It conveys the importance of oral tradition and narrative in the creation of cultural and personal identity. David Dawangyumptewa’s mixed-media paintings depict symbolic and mystical imagery central in Hopi narrative, while Debra Edgerton’s richly textured and intricate scrolls synthesize Japanese and African-American nonlinear storytelling. Through May 25th.
Friday is 2nd Friday Science Night at Flagstaff’s famed Lowell Observatory. This month’s program features the electromagnetic spectrum with exciting science experiments and demonstrations. Programs at 6:00, 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. Included with regular admission.
A new exhibition opens at Lowell on Friday – Pluto at 85: From Discovery to New Horizons. March 13th is the date Observatory founder Percival Lowell was born in 1855, and also the day, in 1930, the Observatory announced Pluto’s discovery. Pluto at 85 features a variety of artifacts highlighting Lowell’s long association with Pluto, including Pluto’s discovery. For the first time, Lowell will display one of the original Pluto discovery plates — the other is at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C. See log books, letters, notes, instrumentation and original calculations, all significant in the discovery and history of Pluto. There’s a nightly Pluto show at 8:00 p.m. on evenings the observatory is open, through April 4th.
Also on Friday evening, the City of Flagstaff’s Aquaplex hosts a Kick Off to Spring Break Hawaiian Beach Party. All ages are welcome for food, music and pool games. 6:00 – 8:45 p.m. $2 for passholders, $3 for non-pass holders. (1702 N. Friday evening, the Northern Arizona School of Music presents a Wind Symphony Concert in NAU’s Ardrey Auditorium, 7:30 p.m. The Wind Symphony is NAU’s premier wind ensemble, nationally recognized for high performance standards.
For its final concert of the 2014-2015 season on Friday evening, the Grand Canyon Guitar Society presents Paul O’Dette, an American lutenist, conductor, and musicologist specializing in the performance of Renaissance and Baroque music. He has made more than 120 recordings, earning five Grammy nominations and numerous other awards. 7:00 p.m. at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church (1601 N. San Francisco St.). General admission is $25 in advance and $30 day of show.
On Sunday, there’s a St. Patrick’s Day Celebration at Riordan Mansion. An afternoon of activities is planned celebrating the Irish heritage of the Riordan family of Flagstaff. Music, whiskey tasting, raffles of Irish goodies, refreshments, dancers, crafts for kids, leprechauns and Irish-themed tours of Riordan Mansion. 1:00 – 5:00 P.M. While most activities are free, the whiskey tasting is $15.00 per person. Regular admission fee applies to guided tours of the mansion. Dress in green! There will be prizes awarded to the best St. Patrick’s-themed costume. Riordan Mansion State Historic Park (409 West Riordan Road).
