Things to Do in Flagstaff This Weekend

Flagstaff Climb to Conquer CancerFlagstaff’s annual Climb to Conquer Cancer is Saturday. Teams and individuals raise funds to donate to the American Cancer Society.  The “climb” is a walk up beautiful Snowbowl Road to the ski area where there will be entertainment, food and a celebration.  $40 per person, begins at the base of Snowbowl Road at 7:00 a.m.

The Theatrikos Theatre Company presents James and the Giant Peach, this weekend only. This amazing adventure will fulfill the fantasy of anyone who has ever dreamed of escape. Friday (5:00 and 7:30 p.m.), Saturday (2:00 and 7:00 p.m.) and Sunday (2:00 p.m.).  Doris Harper-White Playhouse, $10 per person.  Theatrikos Box Office: (928) 774-1662.

On Friday evening, the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association presents 3rd Friday at the Market of Dreams/Mercado de los Sueños, at 2532 E. Seventh Ave. (parking lot of the Cal Ranch Store).  The Market of Dreams is a new community project designed to create opportunity for cooperative entrepreneurship and grassroots leadership, stimulating local economics and promoting a vibrant, multi-cultural market.  5:00 – 8:00 p.m.

This week’s Friday Evenings on the Square performances on Heritage Square, downtown, include Orchestra Northern Arizona with live symphonic music, and Polka Katzenan, a local Flagstaff band specializing in German Polka music.  6:00 – 8:00 p.m.  It’s free!

Summer Saturdays continue at Willow Bend Environmental Education Center (703 E. Sawmill Rd.) with family-friendly fun and learning every Saturday during the summer, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  This week’s topic – Birds of the Rio de Flag.  Willow Bend is a birding hot spot.

Celebrating its 150th Anniversary, the Arizona Historical Society (AHS) hosts two events on Saturday at Riordan Mansion State Park  (409 W. Riordan Rd.).  A Living History Presentation: Arizona Rough Riders will be 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on the mansion grounds where the living history group will be dressed in authentic period dress of the famous Rough Riders, carrying 100-year-old weapons for the public’s examination.  Hear descriptions of the era, the war, the effects, and the social mores of turn of the century America. At 7:00 p.m., Bill Peterson, Director of the Arizona Historical Society’s Northern Division will present a slide show, Arizona’s 150.  In celebration of its anniversary, AHS put together an exhibit of 150 of the most interesting objects from the vast, statewide collection.  The slide show highlights these objects and the exception stories that go with them.

On Saturday at 12:00 noon, The Northern Arizona University Alumni Association hosts a Flagstaff Alumni Family Picnic.  Bring a blanket, chairs and a picnic lunch.  Dessert and entertainment provided.  North Quad, 12:00 – 2:00 p.m.  RSVP here, or call (928) 523-8821.  Weather contingency will be emailed to RSVP’d participants.

This week’s Movie on the Square on Heritage Square is “Despicable Me 2.”    Entertainment begins at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.

On Sunday, the Ponderosa Players, chamber musicians from the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra, will perform outdoors at Lowell Observatory in the rotunda area.  5:00 p.m.  Admission is free.  Seating is provided.  Concert held indoors if the weather is poor.

Historic Flagstaff Walking Tours are available each day except Mondays.  10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., departing from the Flagstaff Visitors Center in the train station.  $10 per person.  Phone: (928) 853-0792.

Guided Hart Prairie Nature Walks continue on Sunday mornings on the western slope of the San Francisco Peaks with a member of the Nature Conservancy.  More info: (928) 774-8892.

Each Sunday, there’s a Sunday Salsa Social (the dance, not the food) sponsored by the Flagstaff Latin Dance Collective at Tranzend Studio Fitness (417 W Santa Fe Ave.) for all levels of dancers.  Lesson from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., with social dancing to follow.   Learn Salsa, Bachata, Cha Cha, Zouk, Kizomba and more.  $5, $4 with student ID.  Refreshments provided.
