On Saturday, by the calendar, it’s officially Summer. Flagstaff Summer events and activities are in full swing. The weather is wonderful, and there are so many things to enjoy about Flagstaff this weekend and in the weeks ahead! On Saturday (9:00 a.m. – 4 p.m.) take a spin out to the Coconino County Fairgrounds for The Big Heap Vintage and Handmade Festival, a two-day, juried selection of wares from the best pickers and artists in the West. Shoppers will find vintage, salvaged, industrial, handmade, hand forged, modern, antique, recycled, and repurposed goods for the home and garden. Items include furniture, vintage clothing, jewelry, garden items, artworks, pottery and more. . Continues on Sunday, (9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) Admission is $3 while the doors are open.
A perennial favorite event at the Murdoch Community Center (203 E. Brannen Ave) is Juneteenth – a nationwide celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. The Juneteenth celebration includes free hot dogs and hamburgers, music, information booths, a bounce house, balloon twists and free health screenings. Free. 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
A Saturday event celebrating education, High Altitude Storytelling: Flagstaff Lifelong Learning Celebration, is sure to offer something for everyone. The event offers art, reading and fun hands-on math activities for children and youth. A community leader will read to children. Free Lifetime Fitness Classes offered for all ages as well. A free raffle caps the event. The free event is at Killip Elementary School (2300 E. Sixth Ave.), 12:30 – 4:00 p.m.
Next on the schedule in the Arboretum at Flagstaff’s Summer Concert Series is Saturday evening. Chris and Lena Jácome provide intimate, inviting and exceptionally exciting flamenco performances that only a perfectly matched pair can manifest. Witness an unforgettable flamenco performance and the profound connection of two kindred spirits. Concerts are held outdoors, rain or shine. Take along a picnic dinner, blanket or concert chairs. 5:30 p.m.
This week’s Movie on the Square at Heritage Square is “The Hunger Games 1.” Sponsored by the Flagstaff Downtown Business Alliance, a family movie is shown at dusk on the town square every Saturday evening through the summer. Entertainment begins at 5:00 p.m. Get down there early to stake out a spot for a blanket or lawn chairs!
Enjoy a Guided Hart Prairie Nature Walk on Sunday morning with a member of the Nature Conservancy on the western slope of the San Francisco Peaks. On Sunday, the Flagstaff Community Market continues through the summer and early autumn, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., in the city hall west parking lot (211 W. Aspen Ave.). Local and regional produce, breads, jams, honey, flowers, baked goods, prepared foods, breakfast at the market, and more.
Sunday is the 8th Annual Pets in the Pines event at Wheeler Park hosted by the Second Chance Center for Animals. It’s a family and pet friendly adoption event. Lots of dogs and cats available for adoption, as well as demonstrations, food, games, raffles and more. Admission is free, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Maybe you’ll make a new furry friend.
