Summer is ramping up, and there are so many things to do when you call Flagstaff home.
This Saturday is the annual Made in the Shade Beer Tasting Festival, a fundraiser for Sun Sounds of Arizona, Flagstaff’s reading and information service for those who are blind or otherwise print disabled. Local and regional breweries come together at the Pepsi Amphitheater at Fort Tuthill, Music, entertainment and an assortment of food choices. A 21 and over event. No children or animals (except service dogs) allowed in the festival area. General admission $45/$55 day of event, VIP admission $80/$90 day of event. VIP entrance at 12:00 noon, general admission 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Designated driver tickets and shuttles from downtown are available.
See the Flagstaff Light Opera Company’s production of Guys and Dolls, one of the most-performed musicals in the U.S. Sinagua Middle School (3950 E. Butler Ave.), on Friday and Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Tickets: $20 adults, $15 students & seniors, $10 for 12 and under.
The weather’s not the only thing that’s warm in Flagstaff this weekend. Head to Thorpe Park on Saturday (10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) and Sunday (9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) for the annual Flagstaff Chili Festival. Saturday is the 31st Annual Route 66 Regional Chili Cookoff and Sunday is the 43rd Annual Arizona State Championship Chili Cookoff. Cooks from across the southwest present their signature recipes. Public tasting and voting, families welcome! Tasting kits are $3, additional tastes for 50¢.
If you’ve been to the spectacularly-restored La Posada Hotel in Winslow, you’ve seen the large format paintings by Tina Mion throughout the public areas. On Friday evening, meet Mion in Flagstaff at the Opening Reception of Memento Mori – a retrospective of her poignant canvasses in an artistic journey and spiritual exploration of death and dying. Coconino Center for the Arts, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
This week, Downtown Friday Nights on Heritage Square features students from the Flagstaff School of Music (6:00 p.m.) and the group Star Fang at 7:00 p.m. Free!

The City of Flagstaff hosts a Community Yard Sale on Saturday morning, Flagstaff Recreation Center (2403 N. Izabel St.), 7:00 – 11:00 a.m. Clear some space in your garage, or to fill it up with some new stuff! Exhibitors set up at 6:00 a.m. Complete details at the city website.
Volunteer at the Picture Canyon Trail Day on Saturday. Pitch in and help building trails, installing signs, and re-vegetating the Picture Canyon Natural and Cultural Preserve. Event starts at 8:00 a.m. and conclude with lunch at 1:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Bagels, coffee, snacks, beverages, tasty lunch and FUN are all provided.
Place a bid on your choice of over 300 original Navajo rugs and weavings on Saturday at the Museum of Northern Arizona’s Navajo Rug Auction. Preview begins at 9:00 a.m. Auction begins at 2:00 p.m. No cost to attend or bid. Experts will be there to help you evaluate and buy Navajo rugs.
On Saturday afternoon, John Abrahamsen and Radio Free Flagstaff will be hosting the First Annual Local Film Festival, featuring three features made by Flagstaff filmmakers. A donation of $6 is requested for the entire festival – a joint fundraiser for Radio Free Flagstaff, Theatrikos, and the up-and-coming filmmakers. This week’s Movie on the Square at Heritage Square is “Up.” Sponsored by the Flagstaff Downtown Business Alliance, a family movie is shown at dusk on the town square every Saturday evening through the summer. Entertainment begins at 5:00 p.m. Get down there early!
Enjoy a Guided Hart Prairie Nature Walk on Sunday morning with a member of the Nature Conservancy on the western slope of the San Francisco Peaks. Learn about birds, wildflowers, forest ecology, and the Nature Conservancy. To join the walk, meet at the Fort Valley Plaza Shopping Center, (1000 N. Humphreys St.) at the southwest corner by the guardrail before 10:00 a.m. Essential items: sturdy shoes, sun protection, rain gear or jacket, and water. Reservations are not required.
