Things to Do in Flagstaff This Weekend

Summer in Flagstaff kicks off in a big way this weekend, starting with Flagstaff Hullabaloo, Saturday and Sunday in Wheeler Park!  Voted Flagstaff’s Best Annual Event by the readers of the Arizona Daily Sun and Flag Live for the last four years, Flagstaff Hullabaloo is community festival that features giant puppets, a bike parade, costume contests, live music, a huge kids’ area, circus performances, local food and vendors, microbrews, and more!  Proceeds benefit Grand Canyon Youth, Flagstaff Foodlink, and Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra.  Tickets are $5 advance, $7 day of, and $50 for a VIP pass.  Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., Sunday 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Friday is the first Friday of the month, time for Flagstaff’s popular First Friday ArtWalk a monthly street party and celebration of the arts.  Art galleries and businesses open their doors from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., with special art exhibitions, performances, live music, treats and much more. Many downtown hot spots remain open after 9:00 p.m. In conjunction with ArtWalk, this week’s Downtown Friday Nights performance at Heritage Square features TheatriKids (6:00 p.m.) & Ballet Folklorico de Colores (7:00 p.m.). Other music during ArtWalk includes a Flamenco Guitar performance by Lliam Christy at Madrid Tapas y Sangria (12 E. Route 66), and the popular Irish pub band The Knockabouts at Collins Irish Pub, (corner of Route 66 and Leroux St.).

Runners get your shoes on and head to Thorpe Park on Saturday morning for the 31st Annual Sacred Mountain Prayer Run sponsored by Native Americans for Community Action.  Choose the 5K or 10K event on courses that are described by runners at “challenging.” The race is called a Prayer Run because of a practice initiated by Native Americans as a means of “putting feet to prayers” as a tradition, or in other words, putting “action to our prayers”. All proceeds from the race benefit NACA clients with emergency needs such as food, shelter medical assistance, utilities, etc.  Registration begins at 6:30 a.m.  10K is $40, 5K is $30.

Saturday and Sunday, the Flagstaff Kennel Club hosts its annual dog show at Ft. Tuthill Park, featuring over 100 competitive dogs.

Also at Ft. Tuthill on Saturday you will have the opportunity to sniff and taste exquisite wines from international, domestic and award-winning Arizona vintners  at the 5th Annual Flagstaff Wine & Food Festival, sponsored by the Friends of Coconino County Parks. $35 includes four wine/beer tastes, a souvenir wineglass, unlimited food sampling, and parking. Additional wine tasting passports available.  12:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Saturday evening is the second in the Summer Concert Series at the Arboretum at Flagstaff — outdoors under the shade of the cool pines with a view of the San Francisco Peaks, rain or shine at 5:30 p.m.  The Domingo DeGrazia Spanish Guitar Band performs Flamenco music.Tickets $18 general, $14 for members of The Arboretum of Flagstaff Cultural Partners.  $9 for children 6 – 16.

On Sunday morning, enjoy a Guided Hart Prairie Nature Walk with a member of the Nature Conservancy on the western slope of the San Francisco Peaks. The ninety-minute walk is an opportunity to learn more about birds, wildflowers, forest ecology, and the Conservancy’s work across the region. To join the walk, meet at the Fort Valley Plaza Shopping Center, (1000 N. Humphreys St.) at the southwest corner by the guard rail before 10:00 a.m.  Essential items: sturdy shoes, sun protection, rain gear or jacket, and water. On Sunday, the Flagstaff Farmers Market continues, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  Farmers Market features the freshest in local and regional produce, breads, jams, honey, flowers, baked goods, prepared foods, breakfast at the market, and more. It’s the final weekend for the Theatrikos Theatre Company production of Almost, Maine.  Friday and Saturday evenings (7:30 p.m.), and Sunday matinee (2:00 p.m.).  Dates through June 8thTickets.  Theatrikos box office: (928) 774-1662.

Final notesSaturday is Free Dump Day for County residents at the Flagstaff City Landfill.  Clear out your yards, your garages, and help your neighbors do the same. County Supervisors Liz Archuleta and Mandy Metzger will be traveling through the northeast rural neighborhoods in the morning, serving coffee to folks who are working in their yards. If you have nothing to do at home, the Flagstaff Biking Organization is pitching in to clean up Rogers Lake Trail as part of National Trails Day.
