The Community Art Exhibit 2014 showcasing local artists is on display at Flagstaff’s High Country Conference Center (201 W. Butler Ave.). This juried exhibition, composed of 15 artists, includes photography, acrylics, watercolor, ceramics, carved wood, fiberglass sculpture, and jewelry. The gallery accommodates both two-dimensional framed pieces and three-dimensional pieces in a dynamic setting against a view of the San Francisco Peaks through 32 foot windows lining the gallery area. Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Flagstaff (BBBSF) is hosting The BIG Chili Tasting on Friday at noon at 102 W. Hunt in downtown Flagstaff. If you’re thinking about volunteering you can connect with other mentors involved with BBBSF and learn all about the program. They will be serving the chili to be entered in the Flagstaff Chili Festival in June.
The Downtown Friday Nights series begins its summer run at Heritage Square this week as local singer, songwriter and storyteller Tony Norris performs at 6:00 p.m., followed by Anam Cara Dixon at 7:00 p.m.
Also on Friday night, Grateful Dead tribute band Xtra Ticket plays the Green Room (15 N Agassiz St.) at 9:00 p.m. Xtra Ticket is an Arizona home-grown act that has been performing in the Southwest since 1994. Each show is like a road trip. From the on and off-ramps of song segues to the superhighways of exploratory jams, this band pushes themselves to the limits, driving their fans on a musical journey to an ultimately grateful destination. The band’s level of devotion elevates the music and magic to make each show an unforgettable experience. $5 at the door.
On Saturday evening the Flagstaff Downtown Business Alliance once again hosts the popular Movies on the Square series at Heritage Square. Bring a blanket, bring a picnic. The Theatrikos Theatre Company production of Almost, Maine, continues this weekend. On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised, hearts are broken.
