This weekend in Flagstaff, don’t miss the fifth annual Flagstaff Performance Arts and Film Festival with dance in the air, dance on the screen, and dance performed live on the stage. On Friday afternoon, come share a snack and a story about how the Southside has impacted your history and culture at the Southside Celebration of History and Culture, South Beaver School (506 S. Beaver St.), 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Hear a presentation by Delia Munoz on the Los Recuerdos Oral History Project for NAU Cline Library’s Special Collections. Hear what’s ahead for the Southside from Reggie Eccleston, City of Flagstaff Community Development and Deidre Crawley, Civic Service Institute At NAU. Admission is free, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
When it’s the first Friday of the month, it’s time for downtown Flagstaff’s First Friday ArtWalk – a monthly street party. Art galleries and businesses open their doors from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. with special art exhibitions, performances, live music, treats and much more. Many downtown hot spots remain open after 9:00 p.m. Flagstaff Arts Council is proud to announce the first-ever Cash for Local Change event during this month’s ArtWalk. Criollo Latin Kitchen (16 N. San Francisco St.), hosting the first Cash for Local Change event, will host the band Raillery, serve up tasty tacos and drink specials, and showcase bicycle art in support of the Flagstaff Biking Organization, all on the Criollo back patio.
On Friday (7:30 p.m.), Saturday (2:00 and 7:00 p.m.), and Sunday (2:00 p.m.), Flagstaff Youth Theatre presents Tarzan the Musical. On Saturday, Northland Family Help Center and Soroptimists Mountain Morning will co-host a Mother/Daughter Workshop: A Bold Day of Empowerment, at the Flagstaff Family Resource Center (4000 N. Cummings St.), 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Free, lunch is included. This event will focus on empowering women through education on positive body image, healthy relationships, and encouraging leadership. Mothers, grandmothers, granddaughters, mother figures, daughters, Big Sisters, and Little Sisters are welcome!
Take part in Native Americans for Community Action’s May You Walk in Beauty – Walk of Hope on Saturday morning at Buffalo Park, 8:00 a.m. The Walk of Hope is an event to help raise awareness of suicide, representing one’s journey – a series of small steps filled with hope and a reminder that no one should walk this journey alone. Registration for participants is at 7:30 a.m. $5. The walk is in support of Reach UR Life, a community-based suicide prevention program in Flagstaff.
Haven Montessori School hosts its annual comedy benefit on Saturday at The Green Room – An Evening of Comedy with Sara Schafer, with special guest Scott Moran. Schaefer is a critically acclaimed comedian, writer and producer, and star of MTV’s “Nikki and Sara Live.” She’s also been featured on Comedy Central and FX. Enjoy a night of hilarious comedy, with awesome raffle prizes and fun! Tickets are $25. 7:00 p.m.
Also on Saturday evening, Capoeira Amizade Flagstaff presents an Afro-Brazilian Show with Special Guests Mestres Cabello and Tisza, at Northern Arizona University’s duBois Center, 7:00 p.m. Free.
On Sunday, head to NAU’s Ardrey Auditorium as the NAU Symphony Orchestra and Shrine of the Ages Choir join forces with the Master Chorale of Flagstaff to perform Brahms’ German Requiem. This monumental piece plunges into the depths of life, death, and redemption, with a degree of power and profundity that only Brahms can achieve. 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $13 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and NAU employees, and free for NAU students and children.
