Things to Do in Flagstaff This Weekend

On Friday evening the Grand Canyon Guitar Society closes its 10th Anniversary Season with Massimo delle Cese in Concert at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church (1601 N. San Francisco St.), 7:00 p.m.  At age fifteen delle Cese was ranked first at the Ancona (Italy) National Guitar Contest. In 1982, he won second prize at the Mauro Giuliani International Competition, and one year later he won the Rome International Young Performers’ Competition. Since then, he has had an impressive career as an international concert and recording artist, and a professor at the Aquila Conservatorio di Musica and the Accademia Romana di Musica.  $20 in advance, $25 day of show.

The Northern Arizona University’s Department of Theatre production of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde continues this weekend on Friday and Saturday evenings (7:30 p.m.), and Sunday (2:00 p.m.). From the novella, “Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” by Robert Louis Stevenson, this is a new take on the evil that lurks in the hearts of men.  NAU’s Clifford E. White Theater.  Tickets are $14 for general public, $12 for seniors and NAU staff, and $8 for students and children.

On Friday evening, Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music (FFTOM) brings Steve Smith and the Hard Road Trio to Fire Creek Coffee Company (22 E. Route 66), 7:30 p.m.  The group plays an acoustic blend of Americana and bluegrass music. $14 general admission, $12 FFOTM members, and $10 for students, seniors and military.

On Saturday, take part in Pat’s Run Flagstaff Shadow Run, one of many held across the country on the same day, raising money for the Pat Tillman Foundation.  Flagstaff’s 4.2 mile run/walk is at the Continental Country Club, registration at 8:00 a.m., run/walk at 8:30 a.m. Patrick Daniel “Pat” Tillman played football for Arizona State University and the Arizona Cardinals, putting his football career on hold to voluntarily serve in the U.S. Army in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.  He was tragically killed by friendly fire while serving in Afghanistan.  Founded in 2004, the Pat Tillman Foundation invests in military veterans and their spouses through educational scholarships, building a diverse community of leaders committed to service to others.  Fees: Adults $40, children 12 and under $10.  Food and entertainment after the run.

Saturday evening is Youthfest, presented by Northland Family Help Center, including performances by several youth musicians, dancers, and artists, with several youth-engaging activities and workshop areas. Youthfest helps raise awareness of runaway/homeless youth, Child Abuse Prevention Month, and aims to create a supportive environment for children and youth.  At The Orpheum Theater, 5:00 – 9:00 p.m.  Free.

Also on Saturday evening, the Artists’ Coalition of Flagstaff presents the Opening Reception for the 12th Annual Recycled Art Show at the Hozhoni Art Gallery and Gardens (2133 N. Walgreen’s St.), 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. All artwork in the show must contain at least 80% recycled or reused materials.  Art show continues through May 24th, Monday – Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The Flagstaff School of Music (FSM) invites you to Music Performance Night on Saturday evening at White Dove Coffee (2211 E. Seventh Ave.)  Students will share a few of their best songs in a concert setting, featuring special guest Terry Alan. 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., free.

On Saturday afternoon it’s a cavalcade of choral music presented by the NAU School of Music at the Spring Festival of Choirs.  The Women’s Chorale, Men’s Chorale, University Singers, Chamber Singers and the Harold M. Harter Memorial Handbell Choir all perform beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Ardrey Auditorium.  Adilts $13, NAU employees and senior citizens $10, and free for children and NAU students.  Tickets required.

Then at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, catch the Vocal Jazz Concert in Ardrey Auditorium.  Admission is free!

On Sunday, the School of Music presents the NAU Chamber Orchestra Concert: Dvorak Serenade for Strings at San Fransisco de Asis Catholic Parish (16 W. Cherry Ave.), 4:00 p.m.  Free. Kevin Kozacek leads the orchestra in this lecture-performance.

The Flagstaff City – Coconino County Public Library and the Flagstaff Arts Council, presents Stories to Life: Radmilla Cody on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at the Coconino Center. Cody is a Grammy nominee, multiple Native American Music Awards winner, 46th Miss Navajo Nation, and an advocate against domestic abuse and violence. Her songs are a mix of traditional Navajo music and songs incorporating lyrics written by her uncle, Herman Cody.  Free.

The Local : Color Exhibition continues at the Coconino Center for the Arts.  Gallery hours are Tuesdays – Saturdays, 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Other entertainment picks:  On Friday evening, the Delta Blues Band plays Altitudes Bar & Grill (2 S. Beaver St.) at 7:00 p.m.
