On Saturday, Flagstaff celebrates Earth Day with festivities on the south lawn of City Hall. The event is promoted as an Earth Day to remember, with information booths, vendors and exhibitors, live bands, local food, electronic waste and car seat recycling drop-offs (Wheeler Park parking lot), do-it-yourself activities, and a free community sustainability workshop series. Many agencies and organizations are collaborating for the event; last year there were more than 60. More than 15,000 pounds of electronic hazardous waste was collected last year. Workshops are as diverse as Rainwater Harvesting, Backyard Chicken Keeping and Edible Landscaping. Favorite local bands will entertain throughout the event, 11:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. It’s all free! During the Earth Day event, Friends of Flagstaff’s Future (F3) will host a Trendy Fashion Show at 1:00 p.m., part of its 2nd Annual Trash-To-Treasure-Tribute. If you have a flair for fashion and a desire to keep our trash one step farther from the landfill, then create a dynamic outfit out of trash, recycled, or repurposed materials and enter the show. All ages and skill levels welcome. There’s limited space for the fashion show, so entries will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. It’s the opening weekend of Northern Arizona University’s Department of Theatre production of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, with performances on Friday and Saturday evenings (7:30 p.m.), and Sunday (2:00 p.m.). From the novella, “Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” by Robert Louis Stevenson, this is a new take on the evil that lurks in the hearts of men. NAU’s Clifford E. White Theater. Tickets are $14 for general public, $12 for seniors and NAU staff, and $8 for students and children. Dates through April 27th.
On Friday evening, local writer David Seals hosts a screening of the 1989 film Powwow Highway, a Native American-themed classic based on Seals’ novel that is set to be reissued this spring. Produced by George Harrison (yes, of The Beatles), and a Native American Film Festival Best Picture winner, Powwow Highway is a “comedy-drama” road movie. Rated R, for mature audiences. Dr. Chad Hamill, chair of NAU’s Applied Indigenous Studies program, will lead a discussion with Mr. Seals following the screening. 8:00 p.m. at Theatrikos’ Doris Harper-White Playhouse. Tickets are $10 general admission, $7 for students and seniors.
Warner’s Nursery (1101 E. Butler Ave.) invites the public to its Annual Easter Egg Hunt & Festival on Saturday. The egg hunt begins promptly at 10:30 a.m., for children 2 – 12 yrs. The family event also features arts & crafts for the kids, a petting zoo & bake sale by the 4-H Club of Flagstaff, a bounce house, face painters, balloon twisters, pets for adoption from Paw Placement, and much more fun. Admission is free; there is a charge for some activities, cash only. Bring a can of food (or other non-perishable item) to donate.
On Saturday evening, see BZB’s Big Show, as the Big Zona Burlesque Project presents a delightful, vaudeville burlesque performance with local Flagstaff talent. It’s a bunch of talented singers, beautiful dancers, wacky comedians, a zany band, and all sorts of wondrous entertainment, culminating in the Big Show. A racy but tasteful all-ages show. 8:00 p.m. at The Orpheum. Tickets are $14 – $19, available online or at Incahoots Vintage Clothing, Animas, and Rainbow’s End.
On Sunday at The Orpheum, see an intimate, solo-acoustic performance by Citizen Cope. One dollar of every Citizen Cope ticket purchased goes to purchasing musical instruments for middle-schoolers in Lame Deer, Montana – a community on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Part of Turnaround Arts, a program of President Obama’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities that is using arts education to help students succeed. Tickets are $23 – $35.
The Local : Color Exhibition continues at the Coconino Center for the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesdays – Saturdays, 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
