Things to Do in Flagstaff This Labor Day Weekend!

Fair AuctionOn Thursday through Monday, the Coconino County Fair offers live entertainment, livestock shows, thrilling carnival rides, traditional fair exhibits, interactive activities for kids and adults, and over 100 food and commercial vendors.  At the Coconino County Fairgrounds, (US 89A, at Fort Tuthill County Park).

A concert at the Pepsi Amphitheater on Friday night, August 29th, features Strait Country, an amazing George Strait cover band.  Fair tickets and concert tickets available now online.

Bringing new plays to the stage, the Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase (NAPS) is a collaboration between Northern Arizona University’s Creative Writing Program and Theatrikos Community Theatre.  NAPS hosts a 10-minute play contest of Flagstaff area thespians to celebrate and showcase seven winning 10-minute plays.  Doris Harper-White Playhouse.  Saturday, August 30th – 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.; Sunday, August 31st – 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.  $5 suggested donation.

On Saturday through Monday, Flagstaff Art in the Park is an arts and crafts festival featuring tightly juried, one-of-a-kind fine arts and fine crafts designed and shown by the exhibitor.  Wheeler Park.  Free!

This week’s Friday Evenings on the Square performances on Heritage Square, downtown, include Halau Hulailima and Naleo O Ka Aina (Voices of the Land). Their shows are presentations of authentic Hawaiian culture and hula, and reflect the respect that’s pono (proper) for this art. Flower hair pieces, baked goods, and other Hawaiian themed items will be for sale to raise money to help the Halau Hula Napuaokalei’ilimahe attend the World Hula Conference in 2018.

Summer Saturdays continue at Willow Bend Environmental Education Center (703 E. Sawmill Rd.) with family-friendly fun and learning every Saturday during the summer, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  This week’s topic – Liquid TreasureLearn about the history of water in Flagstaff.

Join a few hundred of your neighbors under the stars on Saturday evening for this week’s Movie on the Square, on Heritage Square.  This week’s feature is “E.T.”  Sponsored by the Flagstaff Downtown Business Alliance, a family movie is shown at dusk on the town square every Saturday evening through the summer.  Entertainment begins at 5:00 p.m.

On Sunday, join ecologist Dr. Gwen Waring and the Museum of Northern Arizona for a Plant Hike, and explore Wupatki National Monument and Sunset Crater! Also on Sunday, the Elden Brass Quintet, chamber musicians from the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra, will perform outdoors at Lowell Observatory in the rotunda area.  5:00 p.m.  Admission is free.  Seating is provided.  Concert held indoors if the weather is poor.

Guided Hart Prairie Nature Walks continue on Sunday mornings on the western slope of the San Francisco Peaks with a member of the Nature Conservancy.  More info: (928) 774-8892.
