Things To Do in Flagstaff This Weekend

Avoid downtown Flagstaff unless you’re going to Dew it!

Flagstaff FunThe Dew Downtown Flagstaff Urban Ski & Snowboard Festival returns on Saturday and Sunday as San Francisco Street gets converted into a downhill terrain course for skiing and snowboarding. Daredevils of all ages are invited to grind, jump and shred over a new arrangement of urban obstacles.  It doesn’t matter if you want to ride the course or enjoy the town. This family-friendly event includes a large snow play area for children, vendor booths, and a beer garden.  The entire weekend of events is free for spectators, who can also peruse local shops and restaurants to experience the unique and exciting town of Flagstaff. Those who’d like to brave the course can visit the event website.  Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.  Sunday, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The Flagstaff Light Opera Company’s production of the Broadway hit Rent opens on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Coconino High School (2801 N. Izabel St.).  It’s “the musical that changed Broadway forever.” Books, music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson. Musical arrangements by Steve Skinner.  Dates through February 1st.  Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m.  Sunday matinees at 4:00 p.m.  Tickets are available online.

On Friday evening, enjoy the sounds of the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra as it presents Breaking Boundaries, the next concert of its 2014-2015 season.  Celebrate three centuries of groundbreaking music. NAU’s Ardrey Auditorium, 7:30 p.m.  Tickets at the Symphony website.

A new show is open at the Coconino Center for the Arts through February 14thThe 10 X 10 Exhibition and Sale features the work of 100 artists, all working in various media within the framework of a 10 inch x ten inch space, with new, original works, . . . all on sale starting at $100 each in a silent auction format.  It’s a fundraiser for the Coconino Center.  Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Learn about an exciting volunteer opportunity with Flagstaff’s Literacy Center – Teach in the Jail.  Volunteers are needed for the Partnership for Literacy Rehabilitation where volunteers will team teach in the jail to conduct assessments of learners’ reading levels.  Information sessions are Saturday at both 3:00 and 4:00 p.m.  The Literacy Center (2223 E. 7th Avenue, Suite B).

A new photography exhibit continues at at the Museum of Northern Arizona is — The Slide Fire Story: A Tribute to Oak Creek Canyon. On May 20, 2014, the largest fire in the history of the Coconino National Forest ignited in Sedona’s Oak Creek Canyon, one of the most scenic places on earth. The Slide Fire Story presents more than 100 hauntingly beautiful images, depicting the fire’s dramatic race up the Canyon and the efforts of over 1,200 firefighters to halt its fury.  Free with regular museum admission.

Attend a Fix-It Clinic on Saturday. Don’t throw it away — get it fixed for free!  The City of Flagstaff Sustainability Program will be hosting the clinic from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Local Works. If you have a household item in need of repair, don’t trash it. Bring your small household appliances, clothing, electronics, and more, and a volunteer will help you repair it, extend its life and keep it out of the landfill. Local Works is located behind the Hunan East Restaurant at 1926 N. Fourth St. If you good at soldering, electronics repair, electrical repair, sewing, woodworking or general tinkering and you’d like to volunteer at the Fix-it Clinic, please contact Libby Champagne at 928-213-2152.
