You can’t beat Flagstaff if your interested in Science! A new exhibition is on display at Flagstaff’s famed Lowell Observatory, now through March 6th – The Planets and Earth From Space. See fantastic pictures taken from Earth orbit and by probes venturing to the limits of our solar system. Hours on Friday and Saturday are 12:00 – 9:30 p.m. Sunday 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Free with regular observatory admission.
Friday evening is Flagstaff’s monthly street party — the First Friday ArtWalk. Galleries and businesses are open from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. with new exhibitions, performances, live music and more. Downtown hot spots stay open late as the celebration continues. Stop by 7 E. Aspen , #4. (Aspen Lofts Artists) to see new works by famed artist Shonto Begay.
On Saturday, award-winning children’s author Cathy Huffman will read from her latest book “The Legend of the Painted Pony and the Western Wind,” at the Museum of Northern Arizona (MNA), promptly at 11:00 a.m. Inspired by Native American lore, this southwestern tale follows a boy and his pony into the Superstition Mountains where they race the wind, explore hidden canyons, and listen to the memories of “The Old Ones.” Books available for purchase at the event. Winner of the Moonbeam Children’s Book Award & Arizona Authors Award.
While you’re at MNA, see more than 30 works by pastel artist Scotty Mitchell from 20 years of painting the vibrant landscapes of southern Utah, on display now through February 15th.
The photography exhibit Love of the Land, sponsored by the Diablo Trust, continues at the High Country Conference Center (201 W. Butler Ave.) through January 26th. The exhibit celebrates the diverse landscapes and the ranching lifestyle that works to keep the land vibrant, healthy and productive. Open during regular business hours, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Night Life This Weekend
On Friday evening, check out The Mother Road Trio (Americana Blues) during ArtWalk, 7:00 – 10:00 p.m., at The State Bar (10 E. Route 66), one of Flagstaff’s newest downtown hot spots. On Saturday evening, dance at The Green Room (15 N. Agassiz St.) to Remix – A Twist of Old School and New, a night of hip-hop and R&B, 9:00 p.m., 21 and over. Also on Saturday night see local music legend, Jimmy DeBlois, at Altitudes Bar & Grill (2 S. Beaver St.). Snow Fun and Safety
If you’re coming to Flagstaff for snow play, please stick to the designated snow play areas. Just pulling off the road and playing in the snow is not only illegal, it’s dangerous.
If you can get there, the Arizona Snowbowl should be great this weekend, with 17 inches of new-fallen snow from this week’s winter storm. Check out the current conditions and full ski area details on the website before you go. Be patient — traffic will be heavy and slow.
