Focus on Flagstaff’s University Heights Neighborhood

This Flagstaff neighborhood features tall pines, great school, wonderful homes

The southwest corner of Flagstaff is a very popular place to live and has been for many decades. Among the Flagstaff neighbors in this part of town is University Heights, which, on the drive from downtown Flagstaff to the Coconino County Fairgrounds, will be on your right. If you’re driving on Beulah, you’ll see the subdivision monument sign at the two entrances to University Heights Boulevard.

Here’s some history of this heavily treed Flagstaff neighborhood:

Back in the 1960s, Northern Arizona University was short of housing for professors, so a group got together and decided to create a new Flagstaff neighborhood. The result is University Heights. The streets of the neighborhood will be familiar names to alumni of NAU from the era of this Flagstaff neighborhood’s creation. Names like Coy, Walker, Ardrey, Moore, Gillenwater are now just street names to many who live in Flagstaff, but they were once leading professors at NAU.

Several decades later, a new Flagstaff subdivision was platted above the original University Heights. This area is officially University Highlands; however, many in Flagstaff simply refer to the entire area as University Heights. There is also a small subdivision of two streets at the south end of this Flagstaff area called University Terrace.

Features of this Flagstaff Neighborhood:

Flagstaff Unified School District’s neighborhood elementary school is DeMiguel. There is a City of Flagstaff neighborhood park, providing a bit of open space and playground equipment on Jewel Drive in the University Highlands subdivision. The wonderful Flagstaff Urban Trail runs at the base of the neighborhood, connecting the fairgrounds with all Flagstaff neighborhoods.

Behind University Highlands is a section of Arizona State Land, which will someday be developed. For now, it’s nice open space. The entire  neighborhood and the state land are covered with tall pines, which are beautiful and a nice change for those familiar with Arizona’s deserts, but it also creates risks of wildfire and icy streets in winter. All of these factors need to be weighed by those considering making University Heights their Flagstaff home.

This is just one of many wonderful places to live in Flagstaff, Arizona! Give me a call to learn more about Flagstaff, or visit my website to get started right now: Living in Flagstaff.
